The Society has established a number of schools competitions for young people of the county which include the Charles Churchill and Vaughan Davies essay prizes, the Clement Davies art prizes and the Garthgwynion music prize. In 1995, a new award was established, for students of Coleg Powys. This is perhaps the most visible way in which the Society contributes to the present life of the county.

ANNUAL SCHOOLS’ COMPETITION 2007-2008

Essay

An essay in English or Welsh of not more than 1500 words on one of the following subjects:

Cheap flights should be curbed in order to save our planet - discuss
The open door
There’s no place for religion in the 21st Century - discuss
The miracle
An introduction to your favourite fictional character
Abram Wood

Art

A work of art in any medium using one of the following themes:

The raging storm
Fear
A local character
Paradise
Own choice

Prizes

For the purpose of adjudication and allocation of prizes, the competition will be organised in three groups:

Group A: Years 7 & 8
Group B: Years 9 & 10
Group C: Years 11, 12 & 13

Essays in English or Welsh

1st prize: The Charles Churchill Award - £60 in each group
2nd prize: The Mary Valentine Award - £30 in each group

Essays in Welsh only

The Vaughan Davies Award:

1st prize: £60 in each group
2nd prize: £30 in each group

Art

The Clement Davies Award:

1st prize: £60 in each group
2nd prize: £30 in each group

Please note: The names of pupils and schools must not appear on the actual entries.


Rules and Regulations

1.    Each entry must be the competitor's own work.

2.    A competitor may submit an essay in English or Welsh.

3.    Each entry must be submitted through the competitor's Head-teacher    

3.    The competitor's full name and year, together with the name of his/her school, competition group, and title of essay or theme of work of art be written in BLOCK LETTERS on a separate piece of paper which must be attached to the entry when submitted.

4.    The title of the essay (and only the title) should be written at the top of the essay.

5.    The theme of a work of art (and only the theme) should be written on the back of the entry.

6.    Neither the name of the competitor nor that of his/her school may be written on the back of the entry.

9.    The closing date for the submission of entries is available on request.

10.    Subjects - see above.

11.    The Vaughan Davies Awards for Welsh essays are additional to the Charles Churchill Awards and it is therefore possible for the same entry to be awarded two prizes.

12.    Although every effort is made to safeguard the entries submitted, the Society cannot accept responsibility for any loss or damage. The Society reserves the right to display the winning entries to the public.
